Thinking about welcoming a dog into your home? The Malinois could be the right breed for you. Protective and unwaveringly loyal, this Belgian Shepherd is both a wonderful everyday companion and a trusted partner in many activities. Here is what you need to know.

Origins and characteristics of the Malinois

Four Belgian Shepherd varieties were selected in the late 19th century: the Laekenois, Tervueren, Groenendael and Malinois. A first breed standard was drawn up in the 1890s, and the standard currently in force dates from 2001.

The Malinois has a medium build and a short fawn coat with black overlay. Its dark mask extends from the muzzle to the eyelids. This medium-sized dog is muscular yet light, powerful yet agile. For adult dogs, the FCI standard gives an approximate weight of 25 to 30 kg for males and 20 to 25 kg for females. Height at the withers is 60 to 66 cm for males and 56 to 62 cm for females, within the limits set by the standard.

The Malinois temperament

The Belgian Malinois is sensitive and needs kind but consistent training. It responds better to learning through play than to harsh training, and is always keen to please its owners.

The Malinois is affectionate and readily shows its attachment. It can sometimes be possessive. It may be wary of strangers and takes time to assess unfamiliar people before allowing them close.

This is an exceptionally playful dog with plenty of energy, which also makes it an excellent working dog. It can, however, settle down and be calm.

Malinois behaviour

The Belgian Malinois loves to please its owners. It responds quickly to commands, pays close attention to its family and may defend them even at risk to itself. It is a courageous and intelligent dog.

A Malinois can be alert and protective. Gradual socialisation and consistent training help it find its place in the home.

Why choose a Malinois?

The Malinois is a Belgian Shepherd variety valued for its loyalty and adaptability. It can become very close to you, building a bond based on companionship, trust and mutual respect.

The Malinois can take part in many activities, depending on its abilities and training. It may work as a guide dog for a person with sight loss, a tracking dog or a drug-detection dog. It can also work as a guard or patrol dog, or be a faithful playmate for children, whom it may instinctively protect.

How to care for a Malinois

Above all, this is an active dog. It may be most comfortable in a home with a garden or in the countryside. It can also adapt to apartment life if given long daily walks. It will enjoy running, tackling obstacles or simply joining you for walks in the forest.

Until your puppy has finished growing, offer short play sessions, new experiences and walks suited to its age and pace. Alternate activities with rest. Increase exercise gradually and avoid intense workouts or repeated jumping. Your vet can help you adapt activity to your puppy’s development.

Regular veterinary care and a suitable lifestyle are essential. Like all dogs, a Malinois can be affected by heat or cold. Adapt walks to the weather, provide fresh water and a sheltered space, and avoid exercise in very hot weather.

The Malinois coat needs weekly brushing. During spring and autumn shedding, use an undercoat rake to remove loose undercoat. Trim the nails regularly if they do not wear down naturally. Use gauze and saline solution to clean the eyes. Ear drops can help maintain ear hygiene. Do not forget to brush the teeth.

A Malinois needs a complete, balanced diet suited to its age, size and activity level. Choose a growth formula for a puppy. Adjust portions and meal frequency to its needs with advice from your vet. Monitor its weight and make any diet changes gradually.
