Wonderful dog

The German Shepherd is an active, versatile dog that forms strong bonds with its family. It enjoys shared activities and consistent training. Before welcoming one, take time to learn about the breed’s character, needs and the routine that suits it. Our team can help you think it through.

Origins and characteristics of the German Shepherd

Systematic breeding of the German Shepherd began in 1899, using herding dogs from central and southern Germany. The aim was to develop a capable working dog. The first breed standard was established on 20 September 1899, based on proposals by A. Meyer and Max von Stephanitz.

This muscular dog reaches 60–65 cm and 30–40 kg for adult males, and 55–60 cm and 22–32 kg for females. It has an elongated body, a slightly sloping croup and a tail that reaches at least to the hock. Its head is proportionate to its body, with almond-shaped eyes, a strong muzzle and erect ears.

The breed standard recognises two coat varieties: double coat and long double coat, both with an undercoat. A German Shepherd’s coat may be black and/or grey, often with markings in shades of brown, tan, reddish-brown or yellow.

The German Shepherd’s temperament

The German Shepherd is eager to please its owner and can adapt to different roles, whether as a companion, a protection dog or a partner in rescue work. This breed thrives on mutual respect.

Affectionate and playful, the German Shepherd often learns well through play. Its prey drive may be developed depending on the work it is trained for. It is highly intelligent and can quickly analyse and understand new situations. It may be wary of strangers without being aggressive.

With regular opportunities to use its energy, its balanced temperament can make it calm and quiet. Although independent, the German Shepherd enjoys its owner’s company and can also spend some time alone.

German Shepherd behaviour

This breed can tolerate some time alone. However, it should not be shut indoors for long days and needs regular quality time with its owner.

The German Shepherd’s intelligence goes hand in hand with an obedient nature. With a gentle, firm and patient approach, you can train it effectively and set boundaries using positive methods.

Its protective instinct may lead it to bark when wary or alert its owner to a possible danger. Good training can help prevent excessive barking.

Why choose a German Shepherd?

This breed is valued for its versatility, ability to learn and strong bonds with its family. Welcoming a German Shepherd takes time, activities and consistent training that respects its needs. Our team can help you decide whether the breed fits your lifestyle, experience and other pets at home.

How to care for a German Shepherd

Naturally active, a German Shepherd needs regular walks and contact with its family. Apartment living may be possible if the dog can spend time with you, but it will need several walks each day to exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Plan hikes and regular outings together.

As a large breed, the German Shepherd can be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Selective breeding can reduce these risks. Regular veterinary care is important; the breed’s average life expectancy is 10 to 12 years.

Brush weekly to keep the coat in good condition. Baths are possible and even recommended, as long as they are not too frequent. Remember to trim your German Shepherd’s nails regularly, or have them trimmed.
